Phil is a neuroscientist and a Professor of Medical Science Education. His specialist areas are learning, teaching and assessment; how and why do people learn, and how do we know what they have learned? Phil’s extensive research focuses on the evidence base for effective educational practice, especially educational assessment, and the impact of new generative AI tools on learning and teaching.
In 2024, Phil was awarded Honorary Fellowship of the Academy of Medical Educators. This is the highest award of the Academy and recognises exceptional individuals who have made a significant contribution to medical education.
